Question: I cannot transfer data from my Fluke 6500 Series I PAT-Tester with either RS232 or RS232 to USB Adapter. What can I do?

Answer: You may use the wrong cable or an old adapter!

If the data transfer from the Fluke 6500 to the Fluke DMS or Fluke TruTest software via serial interface cable does not work, please first check whether the original cable is being used.
If not, this is generally not a problem, but a so-called “null modem cable” is required. In contrast to the normal RS232, the pin assignment is different here.
This cable can be purchased from our sales partners or from specialist retailers.

A null modem cable has the same “gender” on both sides

In order to connect this cable to our test device, a “gender changer” is required.

If you no longer have an RS232 port on your computer, a commercially available RS232 to USB adapter stick can be used in conjunction with the original cable (null modem).

Please make sure the RS232 to USB adapter stick is supporting the windows version you are using. Also make sure to install the latest drivers for the adapter, either delivered with the adapter or available on the manufacturers webpage.

If you have connected the device correctly to the PC, you need to check which Com port the device is connected to.
To do this, open the Microsoft Device Manager. You can find this by entering “device manager” in the search bar.

If you have opened the device manager, please open the com ports.

The Com port number is shown here in brackets behind the connected devices. In this example the device tester is on -COM9- Please make sure that the Com port is single digit. With Com ports >9 there may be problems with transmission.

You should now be able to chose the proper COM port in Fluke DMS or Fluke TruTest and download your measurements from the Fluke 6500 PAT tester.
